The age-old West African rivalry lived up to its billing as Nigeria’s Flying Eagles delivered a masterclass in attacking football, defeating the Black Satellites of Ghana 4-2 in a pulsating opening Group B match of the WAFU B U20 Championship on Monday.
The highly anticipated clash at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium had fans on the edge of their seats from the first whistle, with both sides eager to establish dominance and secure crucial bragging rights in the regional tournament.
Nigeria wasted no time imposing their will on the game. Showcasing blistering pace and precise ball movement, the Flying Eagles quickly broke through Ghana’s defensive lines. Right-back Olayemi Ayinla set the tone early, finding the back of the net in just the 6th minute to give Nigeria a rapid lead.
Ghana managed to find a temporary response, but the relentless Nigerian pressure continued. On the half-hour mark, Lucky Oraro restored the advantage in the 30th minute with a deflected free-kick.
Just ten minutes later, former U17 striker Abdulmuiz Adeleke stepped up to calmly convert a 40th-minute penalty, giving head coach Abdu Maikaba’s squad a commanding 3-1 cushion heading into the break.
Ghana emerged from the tunnel with renewed energy and tactical adjustments, clawing their way back into the contest after the hour mark with a penalty goal from their captain, Kelvin Nkrumah, to reduce the deficit and make it a nervous final stretch for the Nigerian side.
However, Nigeria’s attacking prowess shone through once again to put the game to bed. Capitalizing on a swift counter-attack against a high Ghanaian defensive line, Adeleke struck again in the 90th minute with a late second-half penalty to complete his brace and restore a comfortable cushion. The Nigerian defense held firm in the dying minutes to secure the emphatic 4-2 victory at full time.
This dominant performance sends a strong message to the rest of the teams in the WAFU B U20 tournament and secures Nigeria’s third consecutive victory over Ghana at this level. For Nigeria, the clinical finishing of Ayinla, Oraro, and Adeleke highlights their credentials as serious title contenders. For Ghana, it’s back to the drawing board to tighten up defensively before their next fixture.
The Flying Eagles will look to carry this massive momentum forward into their next group matches against Togo and Burkina Faso, keeping their eyes firmly on retaining their ultimate prize.
