The National Sports Commission and the Federal Ministry of Education have officially launched the National Sports and Education Excellence Programme. This landmark initiative is designed to seamlessly integrate quality education with elite sports development, creating a sustainable pathway for identifying, nurturing, and retaining Nigeria’s top sporting talents.
Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, emphasized that the programme represents a deliberate, strategic move beyond measuring Nigeria’s sporting development solely by podium finishes at international competitions.
“This is bigger than medals,” Olopade declared. “We are building the human capital and institutional framework required for sustainable sporting excellence. Our athletes need world-class coaches, scientists, medical professionals, administrators, and researchers around them, and N-SEEP gives us an opportunity to develop that entire ecosystem here in Nigeria.”
According to the Director-General, N-SEEP is fundamentally designed to establish a robust and sustainable pipeline of professionals capable of supporting and driving a modern, thriving sports economy.
NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko echoed this sentiment, highlighting that N-SEEP directly addresses a longstanding dilemma for talented young Nigerians who are often forced to choose between academic advancement and athletic dreams. He noted that the system ensures young athletes no longer have to sacrifice one for the other.
Minister of Education Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa described the N-SEEP initiative as a core component of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, allowing domestic talents to train at home while earning globally recognized qualifications.
To ensure the success of this dual-career pathway, Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, added that participating universities must adopt flexible academic calendars and foster stronger faculty collaboration to accommodate the unique demands placed on student-athletes.
The programme will establish Sports and Education Centres of Excellence across nine tertiary institutions. These hubs will combine high-performance sports training facilities with specialized academic faculties covering coaching, sports medicine, sports data analytics, facility management, and sports business.
Phase One will officially commence during the 2026/2027 academic session at four pioneer institutions: University of Ibadan; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; Federal College of Education, Okene; and Babcock University.
The initiative will subsequently expand to the remaining five institutions: University of Nigeria, Nsukka; University of Benin; University of Jos; Muhammad Buhari University, Maiduguri; and Federal Polytechnic, Offa.
Beyond elite competition, N-SEEP is expected to drastically expand opportunities for young Nigerians, professionalize the country’s sports workforce, promote discipline, and harness sports as a powerful driver for economic growth and national cohesion.
