Wemimo Mathew, widely recognized as the most qualified women’s football coach in Nigeria, has officially resigned from her position as Head Coach of Remo Stars Ladies to take up a new challenge with Bayelsa Queens.
In a transition that marks a significant shift in the landscape of Nigerian women’s club football, Mathew, a CAF instructor formally stepped down from her role effective August 5, 2026. She leaves behind a strong legacy at the Ikenne-based club to join the technical setup of former league champions, Bayelsa Queens.
Announcing her departure, the highly respected tactician issued a deeply emotional farewell message to the management, staff, and supporters of Remo Stars, describing her time at the club as a highly valuable and enriching experience.
“With a deep sense of gratitude and humility, I formally tender my resignation from my position as the Head Coach of Remo Stars Ladies FC,” Mathew stated in her official release She noted that the decision was a difficult one to make, given her strong connection to the team.
Expressing her sincere thanks for the opportunity to serve and contribute to the growth of the organization, Mathew highlighted the immense support and trust she enjoyed during her tenure. She acknowledged that the relationships built and the lessons learned have played a crucial role in her continuous personal and professional development.
Committed to leaving the club on excellent terms, the veteran coach assured the management of her dedication to ensuring a smooth transition of her responsibilities before fully assuming her new role in Yenagoa.
Mathew concluded her farewell address by showing immense appreciation for the entire Remo Stars organization, specifically dedicating her final words to her squad, the technical staff, and the supporters who stood by her.
“To my players, backroom staff, and fans, I say thank you for the support,” she concluded, closing a significant chapter in her coaching career as she prepares to lead Bayelsa Queens in the upcoming season.
