Enugu Finalizes Preparations For 2nd International Marathon As Registrations Surge

The historic “Coal City” is fully primed to host the 2nd Enugu City International Marathon on Saturday, August 29, 2026. The Enugu State Government, in collaboration with organizers Nilayo Sports Management, has confirmed that all logistical arrangements are in place to deliver a world-class sporting event.

Designed to firmly position Enugu as the premier destination for sports, tourism, and business in the South-East, the marathon is already generating significant momentum.

The organizing committee has announced the completion of all critical groundwork. Route certification, comprehensive medical support, strategic water stations, traffic management protocols, and robust security coverage along the race course have all been finalized.

“The city is fully ready. Every agency is working in sync to ensure the safety of athletes, spectators, and visitors,” the organizing committee stated.

The economic ripple effect of the upcoming marathon is already being felt across the state. Hotels, transport operators, and local businesses are reporting a sharp increase in bookings as athletes from across Nigeria, the diaspora, and the wider African continent arrive in the city for race week.

Surpassing Registration Expectations :
Mrs. Yetunde Olopade, CEO of Nilayo Sports Management, expressed her satisfaction with the overwhelming response from the global and domestic athletic communities.

“I am really impressed with the registration turnout. Both local and international athletes, including elite competitors, have been trooping out to register for this marathon, and I must say I am impressed,” Mrs. Olopade remarked.

She also utilized the opportunity to issue a rallying cry to grassroots talents in the surrounding areas. “I still want to use this medium to call on young and talented athletes from the South-South and South-East regions to go out and register, as registration is still ongoing.”

Race Day Details :
The organizers have mapped out a route that will highlight Enugu’s major landmarks, offering a scenic and challenging course for participants. The marathon will feature two main categories, with substantial cash prizes earmarked for the top finishers in the male and female elite brackets.

  • 42km Elite Marathon: Flag-off is scheduled for 6:30 AM from ShopRite, Abakaliki Road.
  • 10km Fun Run: Starts at 8:30 AM from Chris Tee Petrol Station, CIC Road, culminating at Opara Square by 12:30 PM.

With preparations complete and momentum building, the 2nd Enugu City International Marathon is set to cement its status as an annual flagship event, driving youth engagement, attracting investment, and showcasing the hospitality of Enugu State to the world.
