— Following a comprehensive three-day inspection of host city facilities, the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has expressed absolute confidence in Enugu State’s readiness to deliver a historic and memorable 23rd National Sports Festival later this year.
Dubbed the “Coal City Games,” the 2026 edition is set to be a landmark event. Hon. Olopade, who also serves as the Chairman of the Main Organizing Committee (MOC), noted that the impressive infrastructure development, coupled with the overwhelming enthusiasm of the local community, firmly proves that Enugu is prepared to host the nation.
The three-day inspection tour allowed the Commission and the MOC to rigorously assess the progress of key sporting venues. Hon. Olopade expressed deep satisfaction with the pace and quality of the ongoing projects.
“The inspection of the last few days reinforced my belief that Enugu is ready. The people, the infrastructure, and the buzz are all there. At the International Conference Centre, what I saw was world-class. We’re building a world-class swimming pool, the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium is being put into shape, and we’re incredibly excited,” Olopade told members of the press.
Beyond the physical infrastructure, the DG highlighted the massive socio-economic ripple effect the Games are already generating within the state. The local buy-in has been phenomenal, transforming the sports festival into a catalyst for community engagement and economic empowerment.
- Over 500 local caterers have been engaged.
- More than 500 volunteers have already signed up to ensure the smooth running of the event.
“Every time we’ve been to Enugu, we’ve been able to leave with satisfaction. Aside from the huge enthusiasm from the Executive Governor, you can see that there’s something special brewing amongst the people,” he added.
Nation-Building and a Historic Return to the South East :
A major talking point of the press briefing was the historical and cultural significance of the 2026 Games. This year marks the first time in 28 years that the South East region is hosting the National Sports Festival, a milestone the DG urged the media to amplify.
“This Games is about inclusivity, nation-building, and what President Bola Tinubu has always preached—that Nigeria belongs to all of us. This is the first time in 28 years that the South East is hosting this Games, and that is a powerful story of national integration for us to take home.”
The National Sports Festival remains Nigeria’s premier multi-sport domestic competition. It serves as a vital platform for discovering emerging talent, strengthening the national sporting pipeline, and uniting the country’s youth.
