Tobi Amusan has delivered Team Nigeria’s first piece of silverware on the opening day of the World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest, Hungary, putting on a stellar performance in the women’s 100m hurdles final.
The Race to the Podium :
The Nigerian track superstar secured her spot in the final after a tightly contested semifinal race, where she finished second in 12.49 seconds —just a fraction of a second behind the Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton, who took the heat in 12.45 seconds
Amusan significantly stepped up her pace in the final, crossing the finish line in 12.34 seconds to secure the silver medal. She finished behind American Masai Russell, who claimed the ultimate title in 12.22 seconds , while the Netherlands’ Nadine Visser rounded out the podium in third with a time of 12.39 seconds.
Other Opening Day Results
Earlier in the day, Ella Onojuvwevwo represented Nigeria in the first semifinal of the women’s 400m sprint.
- She posted a time of 50.50 seconds , finishing sixth in her heat.
- Her solid performance placed her 12th overall out of the 16 elite athletes competing in the event.
- The semifinal was won by the Dominican Republic’s Marileidy Paulino (49.58 seconds), followed closely by Bahrain’s Salwa Eid Naser (49.67 seconds ).

Team Nigeria will return to the track on the second day of the championships with two key athletes ready to take the stage:
- Ezekiel Nathaniel is set to compete in the second semifinal of the men’s 400m hurdles.
