Coach Wemimo Matthew, the newly appointed Head Coach of Bayelsa Queens Football Club, has been decorated with the prestigious “Ondo State Sports Icon” award by the Ondo State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN).
The highly revered tactician, who recently made a high-profile managerial switch from Remo Stars Ladies to take the reins at Bayelsa Queens ahead of the new season, continues to garner well-deserved recognition for her immense contributions to the development of women’s football in Nigeria.
Matthew is no stranger to the highest levels of the beautiful game. She previously served with distinction as an assistant coach for the Super Falcons under the tutelage of American gaffer Randy Waldrum. Her exceptional technical acumen later saw her seconded to the Falconets, Nigeria’s U20 Women’s national team, where she brought her wealth of experience to bear in nurturing the nation’s rising stars.
Beyond her exploits in the dugout, she stands as a towering figure in African coaching education. As a certified CAF instructor in Nigeria, Matthew holds the highly coveted CAF A License alongside a Higher Diploma from the premier National Institute for Sports (NIS). These elite credentials firmly establish her as one of the most qualified and intellectually equipped football managers in the country.
The recent honour bestowed upon her by Ondo SWAN serves as a crowning testament to her years of dedication, tactical brilliance, and her status as a trailblazer for women in sports administration and coaching.
