Former Nigeria international, Chikeluo Iloenyosi, has formally declared his intention to contest for a seat on the board of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), representing the Southeast zone.
Speaking during an interview, Iloenyosi emphasized that his decision to run is driven by a strong desire to reposition football development in the Southeast, insisting that the region must begin to enjoy its fair share of opportunities within the NFF structure.
“I’m not coming out for the fun of it. I’m coming out to make sure that anything that belongs to the Southeast gets to us,” he said. “This is no longer the time for representatives who fail to deliver tangible benefits for the region.”
The former defender highlighted key areas he intends to focus on if elected, including increased appointments of match commissioners, regular capacity-building seminars for coaches and referees, and the introduction of grassroots football programs aimed at uniting the region.
Iloenyosi pointed to his achievements in Anambra State as evidence of his capability, noting that he was able to initiate meaningful reforms in the state’s football structure despite limited government support.
“I have shown my brothers my capacity. With little or no money from the government, I was able to reform football in Anambra, and we are gradually returning to being a hub of football in the Southeast and Nigeria,” he stated.
He added that his ambition goes beyond securing a board position, stressing his commitment to restoring the Southeast’s prominence in Nigerian football.
“The football in the Southeast must come back again. I have the capacity to turn things around, even without funding. My goal is to ensure our zone takes its rightful place once again,” he said.
Iloenyosi also expressed support for the current NFF leadership under Ibrahim Musa Gusau and General Secretary Sanusi Mohammed pledging to work towards continuity and progress within the federation.
Maintaining that his motive is purely service-driven, Iloenyosi dismissed any personal financial interest in the role, assuring stakeholders of his dedication to football development and regional growth.
“I’m not coming because of money. I’m coming to support football and to make sure we get it right. By the grace of God, if elected, I will turn things around,” he concluded.
