RABAT, MOROCCO — The Super Falcons of Nigeria will kick off their defence of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title on Tuesday night, facing tournament debutants Malawi at the Al Medina Stadium.
Nigeria, the most successful women’s national team in African football history, arrives in Rabat looking to assert their dominance early. The reigning champions secured their latest crown last year with a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over host nation Morocco. With the Atlas Lionesses having already laid down a marker in this current tournament—thrashing Kenya 4-0 in Sunday’s opener—the Super Falcons are well aware that the path to retaining their trophy will be fiercely contested.
Tuesday’s clash presents an intriguing matchup between established pedigree and ambitious newcomers. While Malawi’s “Scorchers” are making their first-ever WAFCON finals appearance, they boast a formidable attacking threat in the renowned Chawinga sisters, Tabitha and Temwa, who are capable of turning a match on its head.
Guided by head coach Lovermore Fazili, Malawi’s recent form includes a creditable draw against a highly-rated Zambian side and a decisive victory over Angola during the qualifiers. Alongside the Chawingas, the Scorchers will rely on a core featuring defenders Ireen Khumalo and Olivia Phikani, as well as midfielders Rose Kadzere and Letticia Chinyamula, to test the Nigerian setup.
Despite their status as heavy favorites, Nigeria’s head coach Justine Madugu has emphasized that his squad will not underestimate their opponents.
“We have huge respect for all our opponents,” Madugu stated during Monday’s pre-match press conference. “Every team that qualifies for this tournament deserves commendation and a lot of respect. Yes, they are debutants, but they are a very good side. We don’t take anything for granted. Everybody is coming here with a purpose and a mission, so you don’t undermine or underestimate what anybody can do.”
Madugu, who successfully guided the team to the title last summer, added, “We are here for the defense of the WAFCON trophy, and the team is fully ready and set to go. We will stick to our game plan and our mission.”
The Super Falcons will be led onto the pitch by captain Rasheedat Ajibade. She is expected to be joined in a formidable starting lineup by standout goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defensive stalwarts Osinachi Ohale and Michelle Alozie, midfielders Deborah Abiodun and Halimatu Ayinde, and prolific forward Asisat Oshoala.
Nigeria’s exceptional squad depth will also be on full display. A star-studded bench featuring the likes of Toni Payne, Jennifer Echegini, Christy Ucheibe, and Gift Monday ensures Madugu has plenty of elite tactical options at his disposal.
Kick-off is scheduled for 9:00 PM local time (9:00 PM WAT).
