Team Nigeria continued its stellar run at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Tuesday, delivering a string of commanding performances across the track and the pool to open Day Five on a resounding note.

With six gold medals already safely in the bag, the Nigerian contingent showed no signs of slowing down, successfully booking multiple crucial semi-final spots and setting the stage for an explosive evening of medal contention.

Dominance in the 400m
The standout moment of the morning session belonged to Edidiong Udo, who announced his arrival on the international stage in spectacular fashion. Competing in his very first international 400-meter race for Nigeria, Udo completely dominated Heat One, storming to victory with a blistering time of 45.73 seconds. Winning his heat by nearly a full second, he easily secured his place in the semi-finals, where he will join compatriot Samuel Ogazi to give Team Nigeria a formidable dual threat in the men’s event.

The momentum seamlessly transitioned to the women’s 400m heats. Esther Elo Joseph secured automatic qualification for her maiden Commonwealth Games semi-final, clocking in at 52.82 seconds to finish third in her heat. She is joined by veteran track star Patience Okon-George, who utilized her wealth of experience to advance with a time of 53.27 seconds. Alongside Ella Onojuvwevwo, Nigeria will proudly field three athletes in the women’s 400m semi-finals.

Making Waves in the Pool
The success was not limited to the athletics stadium. Over at the aquatics center, Team Nigeria recorded impressive strides in the men’s 50m butterfly.

Abduljabar Adama and Colins Ebingha both powered their way into the semi-finals following highly competitive heats. Adama touched the wall at 23.99 seconds to finish fourth in his heat, while Ebingha followed closely behind in fifth with a time of 24.01 seconds. Their progression ensures Nigeria will be well-represented in the pool during Tuesday’s evening session.

An Explosive Evening Showdown Awaits
All eyes now turn to the highly anticipated evening session, where Team Nigeria’s sprinting elite will continue their quest for podium glory.

The men’s 100m semi-finals promise fireworks, featuring national record holder Kayinsola Ajayi, Niger Delta Games champion Favour Ashe, and Nicholas Fakorede. On the women’s side, the electric trio of Rosemary Chukwuma, Miracle Ezechukwu, and Blessing Ogundiran will line up in their respective semi-finals. Progression in these races will lock in their spots for the blockbuster finals scheduled for later tonight.

Beyond the track, Nigeria’s pursuit of medals spans multiple disciplines:

  • Athletics (Field) : Oyesade Olatoye steps into the ring for the women’s hammer throw final, keeping her sights firmly set on a podium finish.
  • Boxing: Patricia Mbata will bring her trademark power to the canvas in a crucial women’s 75kg quarter-final bout.
  • Wheelchair Basketball:** Team Nigeria’s women’s 3×3 squad is gearing up for a fierce tactical battle against Australia.

With several athletes peaking at the perfect time, Team Nigeria remains firmly on course to make Day Five another unforgettable chapter in their Glasgow 2026 campaign.
