YOLA, Adamawa State — The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) successfully convened its 2026 Extraordinary Congress on September 25, 2026, at the City Green Hotel in Yola, Adamawa State.
The Congress recorded a highly commendable turnout, with 39 of the 44 statutory delegates in full attendance. Following extensive deliberations on the state of basketball in Nigeria and the upcoming electoral cycle, the Congress resolved as follows:
- Commendations and Appreciations
- To the Presidency : In his opening address, the NBBF President, Engr. Ahmadu Musa Kida, expressed profound gratitude to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He lauded the President for fulfilling all promises made to the national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their historic and unprecedented fifth consecutive Afrobasket Championship victory, securing an eight-year unbeaten streak on the African continent.
- To the Host State :The Congress extended its deepest appreciation to the Governor and the people of Adamawa State for serving as exceptional hosts. Special thanks were directed to the Adamawa State Basketball Association, the Director of Sports, and the state sports authorities for successfully hosting the Congress at short notice and for their immense logistical support.
- To the National Sports Commission (NSC) : The President commended the dynamic leadership of the NSC—specifically Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Chief Bukola Olopade—for their unwavering support toward the continuous growth and administrative stability of the NBBF.
- State of the Federation and the 2026 Elections
- Engr. Kida reflected on the myriad challenges that have bedeviled the NBBF since 2017. He noted that while some of these hurdles persist, the Federation has consistently emerged stronger and more united.
- Addressing ongoing rumors regarding his political ambitions, the President categorically clarified that he has no intention of subverting the approved NBBF Constitution to seek a third term in office.
- He assured stakeholders of his absolute commitment to delivering a free, fair, and transparent electoral process to usher in the new board for the 2026–2030 cycle.
- He formally declared the floor open for interested and qualified individuals to vie for elective positions, urging all stakeholders to conduct their campaigns with honor and dignity, while strictly avoiding derogatory and defamatory rhetoric.
- Approval of Administrative and Financial Reports
- The Congress received, reviewed, and unanimously approved the updated activities report presented by the Secretary General.
- The audited financial reports of the Federation covering the years 2024, 2025, and 2026 were formally presented and officially approved by the Congress.
- Roadmap for the 2026 Electoral Process
The recommendations outlining the 2026 electoral framework were presented and adopted with the following key resolutions:
- Elective Congress :The main Elective Congress will hold on October 15, 2026, in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, commencing at 10:00 AM.
- Affiliate Body Elections : Elections for the Technical Representative, Players’ Representative, and other affiliate boards will be conducted in Abuja between October 7 and October 14, 2026

To guarantee a seamless transition, the Congress officially approved the composition of the following statutory committees:
