After nine days of rigorous competition, Team Nigeria proudly sits in sixth place on the overall medal table, boasting a total of 24 medals comprising 10 gold, 7 silver, and 7 bronze.
Performance Director and Athletes Liaison, Victor Okorie, has attributed this phenomenal outing to the sheer grit of the athletes and the purposeful direction provided by the National Sports Commission. He specifically commended NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade for their relentless focus on athlete welfare, intensive preparation, and high-performance development. According to Okorie, the Commission’s unwavering support created an atmosphere where Nigerian athletes could compete with profound confidence and pride on the global stage.
Describing the accomplishment as the product of visionary leadership and strategic planning, Okorie expressed deep gratitude to the NSC leadership for laying a solid foundation for success. He also extended his profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the Federal Government’s committed backing of Nigerian sports continues to inspire tangible progress and renewed hope. This backing, he stressed, proves exactly what can be achieved when athletes receive the right resources and top-tier government support.
Highlighting the unique nature of this year’s achievement, Okorie pointed out that Glasgow 2026 featured only 10 sports on its programme, nearly a 50 percent reduction from the 19 to 20 sports contested in previous editions. Despite these limited opportunities, Team Nigeria delivered an extraordinary 10 gold medals, a staggering return when compared to the 12 golds won in past tournaments that had twice as many events. Okorie proudly described this feat as a triumph of quality over quantity, excellence over circumstance, and determination over limitation.
While celebrating the Commonwealth titles, Games records, and breakthrough performances from a new generation of athletes, Okorie cautioned against complacency. He urged stakeholders to view Glasgow 2026 not as a finish line, but as the dawn of a new, ambitious era for Nigerian sports.
With the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games now firmly on the horizon, he called for sustained investment and continuous preparation.
