End the Drought: NSC Boss Olopade Charges Golden Eaglets to Reclaim Global Glory at WAFU Tourney

The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has issued a rousing call to action to Nigeria’s U-17 national football team, the Golden Eaglets. His mandate is clear: dominate the upcoming WAFU B U-17 Championship, secure a ticket to the U-17 AFCON, and ultimately end the nation’s FIFA U-17 World Cup qualification drought.

Hon. Olopade delivered this high-stakes charge during a morale-boosting visit to the team’s training camp at the FIFA Goal Project pitch in Abuja on Monday. The visit came just hours before the squad’s scheduled departure to Burkina Faso on Tuesday for the regional tournament.

Addressing the young athletes, the NSC Director General urged them to embrace the weight and privilege of wearing the national colors. He challenged the boys to write a fresh, victorious chapter for one of Nigeria’s historically most successful sports teams.

“We have not qualified for the World Cup for a long time now, and the country is looking up to you to end that drought,” Hon. Olopade declared. “You are Nigerians, and Nigerians are fighters. We no dey carry last . Go to Burkina Faso, win the WAFU B tournament, qualify for the AFCON, and then secure our place at the World Cup.”

Promising that the nation stands firmly behind them, he added: “We are dreaming of winning the World Cup, and that dream starts with you. You have the talent, you have the opportunity, and you have the support of the entire country. Nigeria is a grateful and generous nation, and when you achieve this, we will show you just how much your country appreciates you.”

Hon. Olopade further emphasized the vital importance of discipline, unwavering focus, and unity, reminding the players that they carry the hopes and aspirations of millions of football-loving Nigerians.

The current generation of Golden Eaglets has massive shoes to fill, backed by a powerful historical legacy. Nigeria holds the record as five-time winners of the FIFA U-17 World Cup, lifting the prestigious trophy in 1985, 1993, 2007, 2013, and 2015. Notably, the nation became the first in history to win back-to-back world titles at this level.

The U-17 platform has consistently served as a critical launchpad for some of Nigeria’s most celebrated football icons. Global superstars like Nwankwo Kanu, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Victor Osimhen all rose to international prominence through the Golden Eaglets ranks, setting a gold standard for the class of 2026 to emulate.
