The China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCEC) has reiterated its commitment to delivering the newly renovated Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu well ahead of the 2026 National Sports Festival, which is scheduled to take place between late November and December.
Speaking during an on-site interview, CCEC Site Engineer, Engr. Wale Ebenezer, provided a positive update on the project’s trajectory. He disclosed that crucial materials, including the state-of-the-art astro-turf and tartan tracks, have already been procured and safely delivered to the stadium premises.
However, the final installation of these critical ground features has been temporarily paused to accommodate ongoing overhead construction. Engr. Ebenezer explained that the laying of the pitch and tracks must wait for the completion of the stadium’s roofing, which is currently being handled by Sana Group Limited, to prevent any operational hazards.
“We are fully committed to finishing on schedule for the National Sports Festival,” Engr. Ebenezer stated. “As you can see, the astro-turf and tartan tracks are already here. Our engineers and workers are simply waiting for the roofing phase to conclude. Sana Group Limited informed us that they will be deploying heavy cranes for their work, and it is standard procedure to wait so that these heavy machines do not damage the newly installed turf and tracks.”
Detailing the final timeline for the rehabilitation, the site engineer assured stakeholders that the ground installations will be executed swiftly once the heavy machinery is cleared from the pitch area.
“We need a total of seven weeks to complete this final phase,” he explained. “That timeline includes four weeks dedicated to properly laying the tartan tracks, and an additional three weeks to perfectly install the astro-turf.”
With the materials already on the ground and a clear timeline in place, the CCEC’s update provides a strong boost of confidence that the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium will be fully operational and ready to host the nation’s premier sporting event later this year.
