Team Nigeria has successfully concluded its campaign at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest, Hungary, with five of the nation’s elite athletes collectively earning an impressive $130,000 in prize money.
Leading the charge for Nigeria was track superstar Tobi Amusan, who delivered the country’s standout performance of the championship. Amusan clinched the silver medal in a highly competitive women’s 100m hurdles final, clocking a time of 12.34 seconds . She finished just behind American Masai Russell, who took the title in 12.22 seconds, and ahead of the Netherlands’ Nadine Visser, who completed the podium in 12.39 seconds. Amusan’s stellar runner-up finish secured her a substantial $75,000 payout.
The Nigerian contingent also showcased strong, rewarding performances across other sprint and hurdle disciplines:
- Kayinsola Ajayi : Delivered a powerful run in the men’s 100m, finishing fourth to claim $25,000.
- Ezekiel Nathaniel : Secured a sixth-place finish in the heavily contested men’s 400m hurdles, taking home $14,000
- Udodi Onwuzurike : Finished eighth in the men’s 200m event, earning $10,000.
- Ella Onojuvwevwo : Rounded out the nation’s financial haul with a 12th-place overall finish in the women’s 400m, collecting $6,000
This combined $130,000 earnings underscores Team Nigeria’s formidable presence on the global athletics stage.
Hosted at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest, the three-day championship introduced a thrilling new head-to-head format designed by World Athletics.
