LAGOS, NIGERIA — History is set to be made in Lagos as the Rwandan Waka National Team arrived on Friday afternoon ahead of their clash with Nigeria’s Waka National Team in a first-of-its-kind international walking football match.
The highly anticipated encounter will take place on Saturday at the Eagles Club, located off Adeniran Ogunsanya Street, Surulere, with kickoff scheduled for 9:00 AM.
Designed for senior citizens, former international stars, and retired footballers who retain an enduring passion for the sport, walking football offers a unique blend of fitness, camaraderie, and competitive spirit without the physical strain of high-impact running.

Welcoming the visiting team, the Chairman of the Nigeria Walking Football Association, Mr. Godson Uti, described the event as a monumental milestone for sports development in the country.
”This landmark match is more than just a game; it marks the official birth of a movement dedicated to health, longevity, and unity through sport,” said Mr. Uti.
“By bringing walking football to the forefront, we are giving our senior citizens and veteran players a platform to stay active, engage meaningfully, and continue representing our nation with pride.
We are honoured to host our brothers from Rwanda for this historic occasion.”
Echoing his sentiments, Mojeed Adegbindin, popularly known as “Eshin” and Chairman of the Organising Committee, hailed the arrival of the Rwandan team as a pivotal moment for the growth of the sport across the continent.
”This is the beginning of a new dawn in walking football,” said Eshin. “It is going to be competitive, relaxing, and deeply enjoyable. It brings together ex-internationals, former players, and energetic senior citizens who still carry a profound love for the game.”
The historic friendly aims to establish walking football as a thriving discipline in Africa, promoting active ageing, physical wellness, and international sports diplomacy.
Local sports enthusiasts and fans are invited to Eagles Club on Saturday morning to witness a memorable spectacle that proves passion for the beautiful game knows no age limit.
