According to the official medal standings released today, Nigeria’s single gold medal has earned the nation a respectable spot among the world’s elite youth athletics teams. Nigeria is currently tied for 12th place alongside seven other nations: Algeria, Brazil, Finland, Morocco, Poland, Slovenia, and Sweden. All eight countries have secured exactly one gold medal so far.
While the overall medal count is currently modest, securing gold at the U20 level proves Nigeria remains a visible and competitive force on the global athletics stage, showcasing the raw speed and potential of the country’s next generation of athletes.
Within the African continent, Ethiopia is leading the charge on the track, sitting in an impressive third place overall with six medals comprising two gold, three silver, and one bronze. Kenya follows closely, tying for fourth place with China, boasting two gold, one silver, and two bronze medals. South Africa currently sits in ninth place with five medals, while Uganda is just ahead of Nigeria in eleventh with one gold and one bronze.
The host nation, the United States, is currently dominating the championships on their home turf. Team USA sits comfortably at the top of the standings with a total of 18 medals, comprising eight gold, six silver, and four bronze. Italy holds the second position with a total of five medals, including three gold.
With the Oregon 26 tournament still ongoing, the Nigerian contingent will be looking to add to their tally and climb the rankings before the final day of track and field action concludes.
