LAGOS, NIGERIA — Nigeria made sports history on Saturday, October 24, 2026, recording a 1-0 victory over Rwanda in the first-ever international Walking Football (Waka Football) match played on Nigerian soil, hosted at the Eagles Club in Surulere, Lagos.

Captain Adeola Adelanwa, 64, led the Nigerian Men’s Over-60 years team to victory, with Godson Igwe delivering the decisive strike in the 17th minute to secure a memorable start to the nation’s international Waka Football journey.
Following several early attempts denied by a resilient Rwandan goalkeeper, Nigeria broke the deadlock when Adelanwa expertly set up a free-kick execution from the edge of the penalty area, allowing Igwe to convert. The single goal proved sufficient as Nigeria defensively held firm to claim victory before an enthusiastic home crowd.

In the subsequent fixture featuring players aged 50 and above, Nigeria further demonstrated its dominance on the pitch, scoring in both halves to secure a convincing 2-0 win and complete a sweep of the day’s international encounters.
Speaking after the opening match, Captain Adelanwa commended the collective effort of the squad:
“I am very happy and proud to be part of history, and particularly thrilled for Godson Igwe, who scored the decisive goal. This success belongs to the entire squad. Every goal is the result of teamwork—from the initial pass to the final finish. It was a true collective effort for our nation.”
