Team Nigeria’s para powerlifting squad delivered a spectacular 1-2 finish at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games today, with Esther Nworgu capturing gold and setting a new Games Record in the Women’s Lightweight Group A event, while compatriot Esther Oyema took home the silver.
Nworgu claimed the top spot on the podium with a total of 119.0 points. She secured her victory with successful consecutive lifts of 118kg and 123kg before a narrow miss on her final attempt of 124kg. Her outstanding performance earned her the prestigious Games Record, cementing her status as a dominant force in the sport.
Fellow Nigerian Esther Oyema ensured a heavily green and white podium, securing the silver medal with 115.5 points after successfully lifting 125kg on her second attempt, bouncing back from an initial unsuccessful lift. England’s Olivia Broome finished in third place to claim the bronze with 106.6 points, having successfully lifted 115kg and 119kg.
This double podium finish significantly boosts Team Nigeria’s medal tally and highlights the continuous success of the National Sports Commission’s preparation programs. In line with the Commission’s performance-based reward policy, both athletes are set to receive instant cash rewards for their exceptional achievements on the global stage, further motivating the rest of the contingent as the Games progress.
