Lanre Owolabi

As the Nigeria basketball community eargerly awaits the elections into a new board of Nigeria Basketball Federation amid the crisis, Friends of Nigeria Sports, a group of sport journalists, stakeholders and enthusiasts have released a statement demanding that the elections be held as soon as possible.

The statement signed by FNS’ spokesperson, Asiwaju Akeem Busari warned against any deliberate attempt to delay the elections, which he stated could be dangerous for the future fortunes of the game in Nigeria.

“We are aware of FIBA’s letter to the concerned authorities directing that the NBBF elective congress holds on or before January 30,2022.

“And we are equally aware of underground schemings by some selfish persons to push the elections farther than the said date. We understand that they are desperate to continue playing the roles of NBBF,” he disclosed.

Busari, in the statement advised that it is better to hold the elections weeks earlier than the scheduled date. Adding that such early elections would put the new board of NBBF in a good stead to continue its progressive strides and of course, provide adequate preparations for the national teams ahead of its continental and global engagements.

” As genuinely concerned Nigerians, we advise that the sports ministry and NOC rally support for the new elections to be organized in line with the ratified constitution of NBBF,” he added conclusively.
