Team Nigeria’s spectacular run at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games continued on Friday night as the nation added two more precious medals to its growing tally. Ezekiel Nathaniel claimed the ultimate prize with a gold medal in the men’s 400m hurdles, while Udodi Onwuzurike delivered a blistering run from the outside lane to secure silver in the men’s 200m.
These latest podium finishes pushed Team Nigeria’s overall haul to an impressive 18 medals (9 gold, 6 silver, and 3 bronze) as Day Eight drew to a thrilling close.
Nathaniel’s Redemptive Gold :
The absolute standout performance of the evening belonged to Ezekiel Nathaniel. After finishing sixth at the Birmingham 2022 Games four years ago, Nathaniel returned to the Commonwealth stage faster, stronger, and fiercely determined.
He delivered a tactical masterclass in the men’s 400m hurdles final, controlling the tempo from the starting gun before powering away from the pack to stop the clock at 48.47 seconds.. He comfortably outpaced England’s Jake Minshull (48.99s) and Jamaica’s Assinie Wilson (49.22s) to rightfully claim his crown as Commonwealth champion.
Onwuzurike’s Lane 8 Heroics :
The nation’s track success continued to flow in the men’s 200m final. Operating from the disadvantageous outside position of lane eight, Udodi Onwuzurike produced one of the most sensational performances of the championships.
Running a season’s best time of 20.09 seconds (+1.7m/s), Onwuzurike tore down the home straight to claim a hard-fought silver medal, finishing just behind South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile, who dipped under the 20-second mark to take gold in 19.96 seconds.
A Gritty Decathlon Debut
Earlier in the day, Jami Schlueter concluded a gruelling but highly commendable Commonwealth Games debut in the men’s decathlon. Schlueter impressed throughout the demanding two-day, ten-event competition. Sitting as high as fourth after the opening day, he ultimately secured a respectable top-seven finish, amassing a total of 7,665 points in one of the Games’ most physically exhausting disciplines
